The Residency at Casa Garcia has just been announced by artists Rashid Johnson and Sheree Hovsepian, and applications are open for the Spring 2027 session in the stunning city of Menorca (Spain). The program sets itself apart with its holistic, process-oriented approach where residents are not required to produce any sort of outcome or presentation, but the space is rather intended to facilitate creative reflection, experimentation and renewal.
Johnson and Hovsepian reflect fondly on their own ties to the location and its renewing energy for creatives. Rashid Johnson states, “I hope artists who are in residence here will find, as I did, that Menorca has a quiet but profound way of sharpening attention and deepening one’s relationship to making.” Sheree Hovsepian expresses a similar sentiment: “For me, Menorca has always been a place that expands inner space where ideas surface more freely and where creativity feels connected to something both personal and ancient. It brings me great joy to create this residency alongside Rashid and to share this special place with other artists and creatives as a true creative haven.”
The residency will host three visual artists for up to three months and two writers for up to six. Residents will be supported by Hauser & Wirth Menorca, in Illa del Rei where Johnson had his first solo show in Spain.
The space where residents will stay is situated in a picturesque neighborhood in Mahon. The building’s interiors have been transformed by Manorcan architects Maimó&Brosa along with the architects and designers of [Laplace/u]](https://www.luislaplace.com/) to serve the aesthetic and practical aims of the residency program; It includes a 300m2 studio, study, and the largest private walled garden in the city center.
According to a release, “The deadline for applications for the 2027 calendar year is 31 July 2026. To apply for the Residency at Casa Gràcia, or to learn more about the program and its application criteria, visit casagracia.org/apply.”
